I did it!

The day after the race and I’m proud to say I have finished my first marathon. It was not as miserable as I would have imagined — the weather cooperated (low 40s, fog), the course wasn’t as bad as people led me to believe (those Galer/Madison hills weren’t too bad), and I feel OK today (well, at least I’m vertical and walking). I really enjoyed visiting with people during the race and got three visits from my lovely girlfriend along the route.

Looking back, running a marathon isn’t just about the race day. It’s the training, the gear, and the camaraderie with fellow runners that makes it worthwhile. I logged almost 400 full miles (complete stats below) during this journey, which started in Africa and ended at Seattle Center. It was a great experience!

Split Analysis

My Garmin watch says I ran 27.66 miles, so these numbers may not be entirely accurate. However, there’s some validity to looking at them side-by-side as a comparison.

If my average pace was 10:08, then I ran faster than that for five of the first eight miles. Since I wanted to go out conservatively, that looks OK.

At the end, I outpaced the average in miles 23-27. I was very motivated to reel in the pace group that had passed me around Mile 9, which I was able to do, so I was very pleased by that.

Other anomalies: I stopped to talk to Melissa at mile 9 and mile 17, so that accounts for those blips. I also forgot to turn my watch off after the race, which accounts for the odd reading at mile 28.

In all, I think the numbers show that I ran a pretty steady pace throughout.
